During my junior year at Michigan State University, spring semester 2012, I studied abroad in Valencia, Spain.
My ability to speak and understand the language and the culture blossomed after traveling and studying abroad. I feel that it is important to see as much as the world as you can, to ensure that you are ready for students of all cultures, backgrounds, and nationalities. This semester abroad strengthened my ability to speak Spanish and my ability to teach a foreign language to young students for years to come. After my studies, I traveled the United Kingdom for two weeks.
This time abroad continues to benefit me as a person and a teacher. Spending time in this foreign country solidified my ability to speak Spanish, thus making me able to communicate with Spanish speaking parents of students. Having a background on knowing the difficulty of learning a language by immersion has given me a deeper understanding of my English Learner (EL) students and has allowed me to create a stronger rapport with students whose native language is not English.
